Hartsfield-Jackson Serves as Economic Engine for Entire Southeast
Study finds ATL’s multibillion-dollar impact powers region from North Carolina to Florida  

ATLANTA – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) generates more than $82 billion in annual economic impact for the Piedmont Atlantic Megaregion (PAM), a recent economic impact study found. The PAM includes all or portions of six states: Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida. 

“Hartsfield-Jackson is the engine that drives the region’s economy,” said Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. “I applaud the efforts of the Airport, our partners, and the millions of travelers who make our airport the busiest and most efficient in the world.”

The study, conducted in 2016 and 2017, determined that with 63,000 workers, ATL is the largest employer in the State of Georgia and supports nearly a half-million jobs throughout the region.  The Airport accounts for more than 383,000 jobs and $51.5 billion in economic impact for the metro Atlanta region alone. “Our priorities and business model reflect the goal of expanding ATL’s impact on the region’s economy well into the future,” Hartsfield-Jackson General Manager John Selden said. “The Department of Aviation considers the Airport’s role as an economic generator to be its highest calling.”

The study determined ATL’s direct, indirect and induced economic impacts based on a number of criteria including passenger count, employee wages, cargo figures and ancillary business growth.
