Hartsfield-Jackson Leads Effort to Help Clean Up Flint River

ATL, partners remove trash along river’s banks near the Airport

ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport's dedication to sustainability was showcased on April 18 during the biannual Flint River Clean-Up event, organized by ATL Cares.

Volunteers removed approximately 750 pounds of trash from the Flint River and its banks, downstream of the world's busiest airport. The cleanup effort contributed to both environmental protection and community well-being.

April Broaders, ATL’s assistant general manager of administration, addressed the volunteers, emphasizing the airport's commitment to sustainability.

“At ATL, we don’t just talk sustainability — we live it. From terminal upgrades to tarmac innovations, we aim to lead with purpose,” she said. “Today’s event is a reminder that when we work together, we can protect what matters, like the Flint River. This rare waterway, which begins just north of the airport and flows beneath our runways, is one of only 40 rivers in the U.S. that remain unimpeded for over 200 miles. It's our responsibility to protect it.”

Participants in the clean-up included employees from the Department of Aviation, AATC, Delta Air Lines, ATL Fire and Rescue, Flint Riverkeepers and Keep Atlanta Beautiful of the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability.

The Flint River, one of the longest free-flowing rivers in the U.S., runs beneath the airport before joining the Chattahoochee River and flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. Spanning 349 miles, nearly 220 miles of the Flint remain uninterrupted. The river’s waters are crucial for communities, agriculture, and industries in the region.

The Department of Aviation, AATC, Flint Riverkeepers, and Delta Air Lines sponsored the event, demonstrating a shared commitment to keeping the community clean and sustainable.
