ATL to Illuminate Sky with Canopy Lighting System
Signature component of new canopies to undergo testing

ATLANTA – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) construction partners will power up the lights on the soon-to-be-completed North canopy Aug. 15. Upon completion of the structures, more than 3,600 LED lights will be diffused through a plastic canopy of ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE). Wednesday at precisely 11:05 p.m., nearly 1,000 lights will be tested as the lighting system cycles through a dozen color combinations. The illuminated canopy will be visible for miles and offer a partial display of what is expected to become the next architectural icon for the City of Atlanta.

Final determination of canopy color schemes has yet to be decided. It is expected that neutral light will be the default color, on special occasions the canopies will be illuminated to mark specific events; for example, red, white and blue to honor Independence Day; perhaps red and black to celebrate a Falcons Super Bowl victory, or green to mark Earth Day.

The North Canopy is expected to be completed this fall. The South canopy is expected to be completed in Fall 2019.
