Hartsfield-Jackson Awarded For Employee Parking Program
Airport’s Commitment to Carpool Program Benefits Workers and Environment
ATLANTA – An initiative designed to decrease traffic and benefit employees at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) was recently recognized by a leading commuter organization. The Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) awarded ATL for its AERO Insider Carpool Parking Program. The program provides deeply discounted parking perks for participants in the carpooling effort.
ATL received the award during the 2020 National ACT Virtual International Conference on Aug. 5. The Association for Commuter Transportation is an international organization and leading advocate for commuter transportation and transportation demand management.
“Our employees are the backbone of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,” said ATL General Manager John Selden. “This is a wonderful program that helps defray their parking costs, while improving the environment around ATL. We’re honored to be recognized.”
The new benefit was developed in partnership with ATL’s Airport Employee Ride Options (AERO) program, which offers commuting support to Airport workers. Because of home locations and varying shift times, some employees lack access to mass transit and must depend upon single-occupancy vehicles to get to work. To extend a more cost-effective and convenient option to these employees while reducing the number of individual cars traveling to the Airport, AERO partnered with ATL’s Parking division to reserve 30 spots at the Maynard H. Jackson Jr. International Terminal’s hourly parking deck for carpooling employees.
With the Airport’s support, AERO coordinated a substantially discounted parking rate of $15 per day (compared to a $36 regular rate) to employees who participate in the program. This parking deck is adjacent to the terminal, yielding easier access to employee work locations. Through an “AERO Insiders VIP Parking” marketing campaign, AERO targeted Airport employees at the International Terminal who regularly drive to work, encouraging them to organize a carpool, and apply for the program.
Since the pilot’s launch in the fall of 2019, AERO has filled all carpool spots and has amassed a growing waiting list, with 30 registered carpools that represent more than 65 employees who are now sharing the ride to the Airport.
With the conversion of this carpool parking benefit into a full-time program, Hartsfield-Jackson continues to provide unique benefits to employees while reducing carbon emissions.
