Hartsfield-Jackson Launches ATL Apprenticeship Program
ATLANTA – Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), in partnership with the Georgia Department of Labor, Atlanta Technical College, and the Technical College System of Georgia, recently launched the ATL Apprenticeship Program. The new program offers a unique, paid opportunity for selected high school student participants to “earn while they learn” a trade with one-on-one mentoring from an ATL Department of Aviation employee.
There will be 21 apprentices in this cohort, comprised of new hires and incumbent employees seeking to enhance their skills.
“Like other businesses, we are experiencing significant employment challenges, especially in the trades that are so important to our day-to-day operations and growth,” said ATL General Manager Balram Bheodari. “We are always looking for qualified staff who are ready to perform at the standards of excellence that we require.”
The first installment of this program will focus on Facilities Maintenance, with available apprenticeship opportunities for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians, welders and electricians. Atlanta Technical College professors will be on-site to teach mandated Related Training Instruction (RTI) classes, and every apprentice will be matched with a mentor to support their professional development. The program length ranges from two to three years and is open to career seekers 18 years of age and older as well as current employees.
The program also includes a Youth Apprenticeship component that welcomes high school juniors and seniors interested in starting a career at ATL while completing their education. There are three students from high schools within the Airport’s footprint in this first class of participants: one in HVAC, one in welding, and one in electrical.
Programs like the ATL Apprenticeship Program provide an opportunity for motivated career seekers, incumbent employees, and high school students to advance their career and learn a trade while creating a pipeline of highly-skilled workers for the industries in need,” said ATL Program Management Officer Corliss Davenport. “I am thankful to all our partners who made this program possible. We are excited to begin the work and provide the resources for our apprentices to accelerate their careers.”
