ATLANTA – At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, the world’s busiest airport opened 2025 in style as it unveiled a breathtaking canopy countdown marking the beginning of its 100th anniversary celebration. Nearly 108 million passengers flew to, through, or from ATL in 2024. More are projected in 2025 as the Airport may eclipse the 110 million it served in 2019. ATL’s role as a vital hub in the commercial aviation system – and as the economic generator of the region – remains unmatched.
The twin 900-foot-long canopies, shimmering with vivid LED displays, transformed the Airport into a visual symphony of lights. Already renowned for commemorating holidays and special events, these architectural marvels now double as ATL’s centennial centerpiece. You may view raw footage of the countdown here.
Over the next 18 months, ATL will host a once-in-a-century celebration: a centennial gala, awe-inspiring art installations, and captivating stories chronicling the Airport’s remarkable journey from its beginnings as an abandoned auto racetrack to becoming the busiest and most efficient airport in the world. This vibrant program will take visitors on a journey through aviation history while offering a forward-facing lens into the transportation systems of tomorrow.
As ATL embarks on this milestone, it invites travelers from across the globe to celebrate 100 years of connecting people, cultures and dreams. Travelers are welcome to tag ATL’s social media feeds (@atlairport) to share their stories about this dynamic enterprise.
