Hartsfield-Jackson Prepares for Busy Memorial Day and Summer Travel
2.6 million passengers are expected to travel through ATL during the holiday period
ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) expects to welcome about 2.6 million passengers during the upcoming Memorial Day travel period, with preparations underway to ensure a smooth travel experience for all.
On Tuesday, ATL officials, along with representatives from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Atlanta Police Department, held a press conference to outline strategies in place to manage the anticipated surge in travel.
With more than 143,000 additional travelers expected compared to last year’s eight-day Memorial Day period, this year’s travel window runs from Wednesday, May 21, through Wednesday, May 28. The busiest day is projected to be Friday, May 23, when more than 378,000 passengers are expected to pass through ATL.
“It’s hard to believe summer is almost here, but I can assure you — Hartsfield-Jackson and our 63,000 team members are ready to help you get where you’re going,” said ATL Assistant General Manager for Emergency Management Augustus Hudson. He also expressed appreciation for the Airport’s strong partnerships with federal and airline partners, calling them essential to managing high traffic efficiently.
TSA Deputy Federal Security Director Lalit Lal said security checkpoints will be fully staffed, with additional screening lanes open as needed to handle more than 710,000 travelers expected to be screened during the eight-day period. He also reminded passengers that the REAL ID requirement is now in effect.
“All travelers 18 years and older must have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an acceptable alternate form of identification to avoid delays while traveling,” he saidPatience, parking and packing were the key points emphasized by Atlanta Police Department Airport Precinct Commander Maj. David Wilson. He encouraged passengers to remain patient and extend courtesy to fellow travelers. He also urged travelers to remove valuables from their vehicles.
Regarding packing, Wilson offered a word of caution.
“We ask that you pack from zero,” he said. “You are ultimately the person who will be held responsible for whatever is in your bag and whatever is introduced into your bag. Knowing these things will help make your process of navigating the security process go that much easier.”
As the busy travel days approach, ATL officials recommend the following tips for a smoother experience:
Plan ahead: Check flight status and potential travel advisories before heading to the airport. Arrive early: Travelers are advised to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. Pack smart: Follow TSA guidelines to expedite the screening process. Avoid bringing prohibited items. Visit the “What Can I Bring?” section on TSA.gov for details. Stay informed: Real-time updates on parking, security wait times, and concessions are available on ATL’s website (atl.com) and social media channels.
In addition, green-coated guest service representatives will be stationed throughout the Airport to assist passengers and answer questions, helping to ensure a stress-free travel experience.
