AMA Drivers Program
ABOUT
The Airport Movement Area (AMA) Driver’s Training Program at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport licenses airfield operators to operate unescorted on the areas of the airfield that are controlled by the air traffic control tower. These are commonly known as the airport movement areas. Individuals with a regular, operational need to access the movement area, and who successfully complete the program, are issued an AMA badge. The goal of the program is to provide initial and recurrent training for airfield drivers to operate safely and efficiently, while reducing the probability of runway incursions. The procedures, guidelines and airport-specific information in this program, along with proper training from your company, will provide qualified drivers with the basic knowledge needed to meet these goals.
ENROLLING IN THE AMA DRIVERS PROGRAM
If you have never held an AMA badge at ATL, or if it has been 12 months or more since you last held an active badge, you will need to complete the following steps to enroll in the program:
Step 1:
Can you answer “YES” to the following questions:
- I have an operational need to access the airfield (AMA badges will only be issued to those who have a frequent, job-specific need to access the movement area).
- I have a valid driver’s license.
- I have a valid ATL SIDA badge with a “D” designation.
If your answer to any of these questions is “NO,” your enrollment request will be denied.
Step 2:
View and Pass the AAAE IET Movement Area Training Video Course through the IET LMS Portal:
- Log into the IET Training System https://atl.iet-ls.com/Account/Login
- Click the Advanced Training Tab
- Click into the Movement Area Driving Training Course
If you need assistance logging in, please contact the DOA Credentialing Office at (404) 530-6667 or SecurityID@atl.com.
*The online Movement Area Driver Training Course must be completed prior to filling out the Program Application.
Step 3: Complete internal training with your company or ride-alongs with your supervisor.
The AMA program is not for beginners and will not teach you everything there is to know. Before beginning ride-alongs with Airside Operations, new students must complete one of the following:
- Complete an internal training program hosted by your company.
- Complete a series of ride-alongs with someone from your company who currently has an AMA badge.
Step 4: Complete the Program Application.
You will receive an email response to your application with additional instructions within three business days.
SCHEDULE A RIDE-ALONG WITH AIRSIDE OPERATIONS
Initial students from the following companies must complete ride-alongs with Airside Operations prior to signing up for the AMA Class:
- Department of Aviation Airport Maintenance
- Department of Aviation Planning and Development
- Department of Aviation Operations
- Atlanta Fire Rescue
- Federal Aviation Administration
- Any other stakeholders deemed necessary by Airside Operations
All other stakeholders must attend internal company trainings in lieu of ride-alongs. Students required to complete ride-alongs with Airside Operations will sign up for a ride-along in advance on the self-service scheduling page through ATL’s AMA Bookings website.
A ride-along allows students to accompany experienced Operations personnel to help them learn the material, ask questions, and gain exposure to ATL’s airfield. Ride-alongs are not intended to be the sole method of learning, and students are expected to put in time and effort, in addition to ride-alongs, to successfully master the material. A link to the study guide can be found here.
Ride-alongs are offered seven days a week in one-hour time slots at designated times. The number of rides needed to complete the course depends on with how quickly students grasp the material. Students may only reserve TWO ride-along time slots at a time. Additional bookings will be denied. Please see the Microsoft Bookings User Guide for further instructions on booking ride-alongs.
COURSE MATERIALS/ATTACHMENTS
AMA CLASS
AMA class schedules are sent out to each company on the first business day of each month. Classes are generally held on Wednesdays at the following times: 1 a.m. (Tuesday night), 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
A limited number of seats are available in each class. To sign up, email ama@atl.com with applicant’s name, company, and requested class date and time.
What to Expect:
The AMA class is a review and final check to ensure one’s ability to safely operate on the movement area. Students who successfully pass both the multiple-choice test and map test will be issued an AMA badge.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)
The AMA badge is valid for a maximum of 12 months from the date of training. Each badge has an expiration date listed at the bottom. Coordination with individual companies is made prior to the expiration of badges, but ultimately the user is responsible for ensuring his/her badge does not expire. Annual training is mandatory for all AMA badgeholders.
The following are considered “Initial Students” and must complete the Program Application:
- Students who have never held an AMA badge at ATL
- Students who have not held an active AMA badge for more than 12 months
- DOA Airport Maintenance
- DOA Planning and Development
- DOA Operations
- Atlanta Fire Rescue
- FAA
- Any other stakeholders deemed necessary by Airside Operations
Each module should be completed in no more than three rides. The minimum number of required rides depends on how well each student learns and retains the material. During each ride-along, instructors will assess students’ knowledge in relation to the five modules. If students demonstrate they are not progressing, they risk removal from the program.
Requests to change or cancel a ride-along can be submitted to ama@atl.com.
If it is less than nine hours before your appointment time, please call 404-787-6095.
Anyone with an operational need for unescorted access onto the Airport Movement Area surfaces requires an AMA badge.
Specifically, if an individual will be doing one of the following on the movement areas, they must be in possession of a valid AMA badge:
- Driving/operating a piece of equipment (Aircraft, Vehicle, Tug, Airfield Maintenance Equipment)
- Communicating with the air traffic control tower
Exceptions are made to this rule only under the following scenarios:
- The individual without a badge is training and is accompanied by someone with a badge.
- The individual is being escorted by someone with a valid AMA badge. Escorting requires that the individual being escorted is within a reasonable distance and it is possible to maintain both line of sight and communication at all times with the person providing the escort. Please email ama@atl.com with preferred class date and time.
The AMA Class is generally a three-hour course. Attendance for the full duration of the class is required to receive an AMA badge. Late arrivals will be asked to reschedule for another class.
AMA classes are held in the Airside Operation Training Room on the west side of T Concourse North. A parking lot is available outside the classroom and is accessible from the NLVR roadway or the classroom may be accessed through the TSA Secured Area, via Concourse T. PLEASE NOTE: The classroom is in a TSA SIDA display area. Each employee must swipe their SIDA badge to enter the building. Plan on arriving early. Late arrivals will be asked to reschedule. Click here for link to directions.
For the map test portion of the class, students must be able to identify all major taxiways and runways on a digital map. This test requires a passing score of 80% or higher. A practice map test is located under the Course Materials/Attachments section.
The multiple-choice test includes questions related to material presented in the AMA Study Guide and the AMA class. This test requires a passing score of 90% or higher. Students are expected to know this material prior to attending class.
Students who do not pass the multiple-choice test must retake the AMA Training Course in its entirety. To reschedule, email ama@atl.com. If after three attempts a student is unable to pass the course, the student risks removal from the program.
Students who pass the multiple-choice test but do not pass the map test may schedule a retake of the map quiz without retaking the full AMA class. To schedule a map test retake, email ama@atl.com.
No. An expired AMA badge means AMA access privileges have been revoked until recurrent training is completed and a new badge is issued. Violators are subject to a Class III NOV under City of Atlanta Ordinance.
